About Lindsey

Lindsey Jacob

Composer, Saxophonist, Teacher

Lindsey Jacob (b. 1983) is a composer and saxophonist whose musical output is an eclectic blend of elements from many traditions, including minimalism, experimentalism, improvisation, American folk music, popular music, and texture/timbre-based music. Her works often juxtapose stylistically different musical material and address the act of communication, using the voice and body to convey ideas through vocalizations, dramatic gestures, and organic rhythms.

Her work has been characterized as “haunting” by MusicX Musings, and John Shulson from the Virginia Gazette said her work, Thoughts for soprano and orchestra had a “freshness and appropriateness that resonated with the text.” Lindsey’s music has been presented at many festivals and conferences including the SEAMUS National Conference, Cincinnati Fringe Festival, Music11 Festival, soundSCAPE festival in Italy, North Carolina Music Educators Association Conference, Midwest Composer’s Symposium, Byte Gallery International Exhibition, Electric LaTex Festival, and the Louisiana State University Festival of Contemporary Music. Since many of her pieces include theatrical elements, improvisation, and pop culture references, her works are often presented in nontraditional venues.

In 2014, Lindsey was a resident artist at Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts. Her flute duo work, Clinkers, was the winner of the 2013 In Sterio Composition Competition, and her work Floating received an honorable mention prize for the 2012 Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Composition Contest. She has been commissioned by the University of North Carolina at Pembroke Percussion Ensemble, Joseph Van Hassel, Director; William & Mary Symphony Orchestra, Grant Gilman, Director; Eta-Iota Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota, Sarah Johnson, President; Xavier University Symphonic Winds, Matthew Westgate, Director; and percussionist Daniel Heagney.

Former composition teachers include Stephen David Beck, Dinos Constantinides, Michael Fiday, Mara Helmuth, David Schneider, and John Steffa; former saxophone teachers include James Bunte, Griffin Campbell, and Scott Erickson. She holds a D.M.A. in Composition with a cognate in saxophone performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, an M.M. in Composition from Louisiana State University, and graduated summa cum laude with a B.M. in Education from Murray State University. Other musical influences include Libby Larsen, Meredith Monk, George Crumb, Steve Reich, Sufjan Stevens, Björk, György Ligeti, Harry Partch, and Olivier Messiaen. Lindsey is an Assistant Professor of Music at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, where she teaches music theory and applied saxophone.
